Research on the Reproduction of Endangered Animals:

Through continuing support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Zoo staff conduct research into the reproductive and population biology of endangered species. The current focus is on the management of reproduction in small populations and development of mechanisms for implementation of science by population managers.

Current projects include:

Effects of biased birth sex ratios on small population management of gorillas and spectacled bears.
Patterns of mortality and fertility in managed zoo populations of birds and mammals.
Quality of studbook databases used to manage populations in North American zoos (IMS).
